Technology and Business...

Practice what you preach. Old adage, but a very applicable piece of information. What is one of my pet peeves? Think about it. Among other things I am always preaching the virtues of backing up important data from your computer. In this technology age of virus protection, Spam, spy ware and the like, it is very important as well as time effective to make backup copies of important and perhaps irretrievable data from ones computer. You spend countless hours producing, editing, copying, downloading etc. files that you consider important. From that email address to the latest picture from a dear family member or friend, those files on your computer are important to you. Well, last week I didn't follow my own advice.

During Spring Break I changed hosting companies for www.jamesstabile.com. There were some features of the hosting service, The Host Group, for www.jamesstabile.com that didn't excite me anymore. I searched the Internet for other hosting sites that would offer me a more exciting adventure. A hosting plan that offered a wider option of features while at the same time cost effective was what I was searching. I decided to change my plan to Yahoo.

I must confess, my present plan meets my hosting needs, but the thrill was gone. Periodically, I need a change. What's the sense of having computer skills if you don't expand upon them? Just as my Mother used to rearrange the home furniture periodically, I need to rearrange my web sites periodically.

I decided on abandoning my present web hosting service and signed up for Yahoo. I don't know if you realize what is involved with changing one's web hosting service? Especially with the size of my account. The most important step is to be sure you have downloaded and backed up the entire site form the previous service. In my haste I forgot to back up the last six weeks of work that I had done on my site. I uploaded the entire site, at least I thought the entire site, to my yahoo site, then I realized that I had forgotten to backup the last 6 weeks or so of additions to my site. I check the 3 or so different backups that I had done and none were complete. As a result much of the data from the February and March newsletters were forever lost. So, if you peruse the February or March newsletters, you will notice gaping holes in the content of the newsletters. Sure, I could go back and rewrite the sections, some day I may, but I have put disclaimers explaining the missing information and so be it. They will stand as a constant reminder to me, and maybe to you, to always and I do mean always, back up your data.

I will add that this misfortune occurred when I changed web hosting servers. Data on my computer is fine. That reminds me, I better backup that stuff tonight.
